Croutons PDF Print E-mail

We offer ready made gluten-free croutons in our freezer or you can make your own croutons using your favorite loaf of unsliced bread.  We also have a great selection of artisan breads in our freezer to choose from.  Making croutons is a terrific way to use up left over bread but you can just as easily start with a fresh loaf because you will be "toasting" your cubes in the oven anyway.

Ingredients

  • 4 cups of bread, cubed 3/4"
  • 1 tsp sea salt
  • 1/2 tsp fresh ground pepper
  • 1/4 cup of quality olive oil
  • 1/4 cup melted butter
  • 2 tbsp parmesan cheese, grated

Optional Dry Herbs - Use to season your croutons. Start with 1 tsp. of each of your favorites.

  • Italian Seasoning
  • Garlic Powder
  • Onion Powder
  • Parsley
  • Basil
  • Oregano
  • Rosemary
  • Thyme
  • Celery Salt

Method

Preheat oven to 300.

Slice and cube bread to form approximately 3/4" cubes. Anything larger will not crisp properly.

Spread the freshly cut bread cubes out in a single layer on parchment lined cookie sheets. Careful not to crowd the cubes.

Bake in oven for 10 minutes to start the drying process.

Remove, cool and place cubes in large bowl.

Lightly drizzle one half of the oil and butter mixture over cubes while mixing by hand to prevent over saturation.

Sprinkle with salt and pepper and any of your favorite dried seasonings. Mix well to lightly flavour all the cubes.

Drizzle the remaining oil and butter mixture over the seasoned cubes using the same technique as before.

Return cubes to baking sheets and oven for approximately 20 to 30 minutes, turning every 10 minutes with a spatula to ensure equal crisping of all sides.

When crisp and golden on all sides, remove from oven and sprinkle with 2 tbsp of grated parmesan cheese.

Let cool completely and store in a suitable airtight container.

Portions goes above and beyond

In the past 3 years since being diagnosed with celiac disease, in addition to a severe nut allergy I have been on the hunt for good tasting Gluten/Wheat free food - I have gone near and far and Portions is now the place I visit regularly to fill my grocery shopping needs. They not only have excellent GF food but they have wonderful and personable service. From fresh bread and cookies to die for to frozen meals that you can pop in the oven or microwave - Portions goes above and beyond. Best part - their prices are great as well!! I would highly recommend a visit to Portions if you are looking to eat a host of foods that will tantalize your taste buds!
